Later, when her family were in bed, Sunny still couldn’t sleep. Steph was right, of course, she’d managed to hold off Nesti’s corrupting influence. But Steph was a special case. She was the strongest woman that Sunny had ever known.

As Sunny lay in her bed, doubts continued their assault. How could she resist Nesti, when a few spitballs and nasty comments from Verity and her cronies could affect her so much? Never mind Nesti and his world domination - she’d contemplated shoving a chair through Verity’s abdomen after the first spitball hit her head. And look what she did to the scientist who murdered her lover. He got squashed like the dirty bug he was.

Not sleeping was making it worse. But, she knew as well as anyone, when you worry about not sleeping, you won’t be able to sleep. She sighed, and pulled the vibrations that were ever-present in her fingers. She entered the Alternate while still lying there in her bed. Without looking around, she rose up out of her bed, through the ceiling and drifted over the little town of Forster.

The twinkling lights below were beautiful; a thousand sleeping souls below glowed bright in their beds. It calmed her. She flew higher, until she could see the whole of the southern hemisphere.

She felt a tiny bit better. In the Alternate, she felt more separated from the bad things that were happening in the world. It was a separate world, after all. There was no one there with her, no one could see her.

But it was lonely.

A thought occurred to her, and she came down towards the earth again. She wasn’t focused on where she was going, she just drifted to wherever felt the best. As lush, rolling mountains and crumbling temples came into view, she realized she was in Thailand again, in the same spot where Hunter first told her that he had feelings for her. Sadness shot through her, but it was not despairing. She just… missed him. With every fibre in her body.

The beautiful old crumbling temple glowed like fairy lights. In the jungle, the wildlife ran a riot of glorious tumbling energy, from the tiniest ant to the biggest swinging monkeys that Sunny could see cavorting on a temple in the distance.

She settled herself on the very same stone that they had sat on when Hunter first held her hand and touched her face. She concentrated, cleared her mind, and felt her vibrations change again.

The mist-clouds surrounded her. They all felt serene and calm, and their essence soothed her ragged nerves.

It was right to come here.

There were two clouds either side of her, hovering over the ruin that she sat on. Strangely, they were less serene than the clouds that floated up and down the mountain, but they felt… stronger, more determined. Sunny felt the love rush through her, and it gave her strength.

If only I could stay here forever, she thought wistfully. With these mist-clouds. They were probably angels.

A thought popped into her head, as if answering her first one.
